Project Description
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) fosters international cooperative drug abuse research, but recognizes that many international researchers are not familiar with US research standards and practices. In 2004 NIDA offered a competitive SBIR contract to develop online education programs to support capacity building in the international drug abuse research community.

MDI competed for and won Phase I and Phase II SBIR contracts. MDI is supplying NIDA with a series of innovative online education programs to improve the knowledge and skills of international drug abuse researchers in clinical trials, program evaluation, and biostatistics.

MDI Provided
During this 3-year effort, MDI undertook a formal needs assessment involving 248 international drug abuse researchers. This work showed a strong need for further training in basic clinical research and reporting skills. MDI collaborated with expert authors to develop and field test four online training programs to meet this need.

MDI developed four interactive, online education programs covering basic concepts in biostatistics, clinical trial design and management, and program evaluation. All four programs feature numerous examples from the drug and substance abuse literature, as well as sophisticated self-assessment modules. The programs have been tested by non-US researchers and found to be a valuable resource. The programs are available via MDI's Internet platform, as stand-alone SCORM 2004 modules, and as downloadable Portable Document Format (PDF) files.
