Description
An Introduction to the Practice of Palliative Medicine introduces physicians to the principles and practices of palliative medicine. It covers medical therapies designed to reduce suffering, techniques to improve communication with patients and their families, strategies to enhance coordination of care, and actions necessary to facilitate hospice care. It also provides physicians with links to important literature and to informational Websites dealing with palliative and hospice care.
Experience
Ample evidence suggests that physicians are currently not adequately trained to address symptom management and end-of life issues (Baker, 2007; Klaristenfeld, 2007; Mitchell, 2002). This evidence led to the recognition in 2006 of Hospice and Palliative Medicine as a medical subspecialty. The goal of An Introduction to the Practice of Palliative Medicine is to introduce practicing community physicians to the key elements of this new specialty and to improve the delivery of coordinated end-of-life care for their patients.
