Description
Recognizing and Managing Opioid Misuse addresses the use and abuse of opioids in treating chronic pain in adults. Physicians review basic background information and then practice their skills by managing a complicated patient with arthritis pain. Participants learn to manage patients with chronic pain, recognize and respond to drug-seeking behaviors, and implement procedures that will reduce the risk of abuse and diversion.
Experience
Physicians consistently report that they are not sufficiently prepared to address substance use disorders (SUDs) in their patients (Johnson, 2005). In general, physician training and education in the management of SUD is inadequate at all levels of medical education (Yoast, 2008). Researchers (Miller, 2001), professional organizations (AAFP, 2009), and government panels have emphasized the need for greater professional education dealing with SUD. Recognizing and Managing Opioid Misuse deals specifically with detecting and managing substance use disorders (SUDs).
